Test Taking Tips
Mid-Chapter Quizzes
In Sixth Grade Math and Advanced Math, I give a quiz in the middle of each chapter. This quiz is meant to be a checkup that students are able to use the arithmetic introduced in the chapter. I simply assign selected items from the page in each chapter titled "Mid-Chapter Practice Test". Students may preview the quiz by working these items at home. These may not be used during the actual quiz, but the experience will certainly lead to higher quiz grades. (Note: Quizzes usually have very few USA format problems.)
Chapter Tests
In Sixth Grade Math and Advanced Math, a chapter test is given at the end of each chapter. Chapter Tests consist of only USA format problems, so they are more challenging than quizzes. Students should prepare by completing each chapter's corresponding page in the section called "Mixed Problem Solving". In Sixth Grade Math this section starts on p. 624; in Advanced Math this section starts on p. 596. I model my test items after the problems from "Mixed Problem Solving"; therefore, when students complete those problems they are getting a preview of the types of items that will appear on the chapter test. If a student fully completes the items from "Mixed Problem Solving" and turns them in with the chapter test, I will reward that student with a five point bonus on the Chapter Test.
