Dear FSUS Community: The school year has ended with a flurry of activity and the results have finally come in as to the accomplishments for the year. At the middle school we can be very proud of the FCAT results as most students saw learning gains and grade level achievements. In the area of reading, our sixth grade students achieved 84% at attaining a level 3 or higher. Our seventh graders saw a 6% increase in achievement level, while the eighth graders saw a 2% decline. In the area of mathematics, 75% of our sixth graders received a level 3 or higher. This is significant as the past three years saw proficiency at a 60% level. Seventh graders saw the greatest improvement moving from 62% to 87% this year. Eighth graders improved fifteen percent to 85% proficiency. Congratulations to our Mathematics Department for their hard work and dedication! Our eighth grade science scores were at 53% proficiency, above the state average. Our at-risk population saw the greatest improvement in percent achieving learning gains. On the average 90% of our students made learning gains in reading and mathematics, with an average learning gain improvement of over 150 points. This point to the improved curriculum approach we have been stressing the past two years in the middle school. Our honor students continued to show improvement in achievement level. Three of our seventh graders were recognized at the state Junior Assembly in Haines City, Florida. Kameron Martinez, Brian Maher, and Austin Weldon were honored for their collaborated efforts in creating a bill to be presented before the Junior Assembly. In our first competition with the Junior Assembly our boys impressed the older students with their ability to present an effective measure. The work of our students will offer a great benefit for the implementation of a civics program to our 7th and 8th grade social studies curriculum. We are in the process of setting up meetings for our incoming sixth graders for the 2008-2009 school year. Our summer program for these students is July 28th to August 8th, offering students an opportunity to get a jump start to the school year. I will be meeting with parents and student individually during the next two months. We know how valuable the parent/child relationship to our school can impact the success of the student. Have a great summer!
