Health & Wellness Update
Nutrition, School Gardens and Sun Safety
Bananas a Big Hit in Afterschool The PTSA
bought 300 bananas last month and donated them to the afterschool program as
part of the pilot program to improve nutrition on campus. The experiment was a success, as the kids
gobbled them up without a second thought.
The pilot program is designed to show campus food outlets that healthier
fresh fruit and vegetables can compete on both a cost and a taste basis with
the processed food usually served. Mrs.
Rosati, the afterschool director, said the bananas were such a success she
would consider trying it again.
School Garden The spring
garden is producing vegetables pretty regularly now, with the kids growing
enough to take home some yellow squash and cucumbers and have some strawberries
for an afterschool snack. We will be
harvesting potatoes and sugar snap peas in the next few weeks. The Thursday afternoon kids planted a butterfly
garden in the high school plot near the gazebo but so far no butterflies have
appeared. We will remain patient.
One parent
volunteer is needed to help out on Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Please contact me if you can spare an hour a
week helping the kids with the garden.
All the
shade trees the PTSA planted on the elementary school playground a few years
ago seem to have survived the move during the January playground build, and are
showing signs of life.
Hats
Allowed for Sun Protection
Just a reminder
that under Florida High's dress code students are permitted to wear baseball
caps outside during physical education classes and recess for protection from
the sun. Prolonged sun exposure can lead
to skin cancer later in life. Teachers
are also supposed to give the kids a chance to apply sunscreen.

Thank you to all the students, faculty and staff who donated to the Spring Food Drive benefiting Second Harvest of the Big Bend. The Spring collection outweighed the Fall's by almost 300 lbs! Way to go Florida High! You are an amazing group with a big heart! Look for us in the Fall when the turkey will reappear and "gobble" up more cans!Julie Lengacher Recording Secretary poppeeps@nettally.com

The finalists in the Middle School Poetry Jam met to compete before four distinguished judges for the coveted poetry titles and prizes. Twelve students performed original or previously published poetry, challenging their recitation, drama, and creative writing skills. The well-spun poetic words embraced the audience. Inhalants a Deadly Problem
An Article from Florida PTA
Inhalant
Abuse is a very serious problem in our society. Millions of
our youth are abusing inhalants on a daily basis. In fact,
it is such a problem that the sale of many items are having
to be controlled and monitored. Just walk into Wal-Mart or
Sam's Club and try to buy some computer dust off spray or
spray paint. The cashier should refuse the sale if it is to
a minor as age restrictions will pop up on the register.
Many items that we use everyday are being used
inappropriately and are potentially deadly!
Inhalants are breathable chemical vapors that are very
volatile and they produce vapors that children inhale to
produce mind-altering/psychoactive effects. Simply
put - inhalants are inhaled and they can be deadly.
Society is exposed to these substances in so many ways and
it is truly unbelievable the ways that substances are
abused. There are thousands of inhalants and we as parents
took extra special care to make sure our children were
protected from such dangers when our children were young and
now these very same products are more deadly than ever to
our youth! Thousands of our young people have died
experimenting with inhalants. Keep reading this article.
