"Writing up a Storm"

Students wrote stories about a weather event that had an impact on their lives.
Here are some examples:
Leon High School Science Students
are "Blown Away" by
Hurricane House Project
"What do you get when you combine a leaf blower, construction paper, straws and tape? Leon science students building hurricane proof houses!" This is how Ed Muir from Channel 6 TV began his evening news coverage of Mrs. McQuone's hurricane activity. The students had built houses with these simple materials. The leaf blower, showing 91 miles per hour on the wind gauge, blew forcefully on the houses. Some withstood the test of the wind and some blew away. The students were applying science principles about the force of hurricane winds as well as construction designs that make houses more durable during strong winds. They learned about truss bracing and gable end bracing from Mr. Gary Botts, a guest speaker from the local chapter of the American Red Cross. (See Mr. Botts visit.) The students learned about protecting their home from hurricane wind damage and had fun at the same time.

Students built houses with construction paper, tape, 4 straws and a glue stick using specific directions for building hurricane houses (including how to contact the Red Cross website for building information.)

1.First students designed and built their houses.
2. Students tested their houses.
3. The national director of Passport to Knowledge videotaped the students.
4. A luncheon for the director, Mr. Geoff Haines-Stiles, and the videographer, Mr. Brian Igelman, was held at Brokaw-McDougal House.

Hurricane Houses
Students built houses with construction paper, tape, 4 straws and a glue stick using specific directions for building hurricane houses (including how to contact the Red Cross website for building information.) Here are the variety of designs: period 1, period 3, period 4, period 5, period 6, period 7

Live from the sun: Students calculated how many grains of salt in a large salt container.
They simulated the problem solving and estimation processes that scientists use when counting the number of stars in our galaxy:

Leon High School Solar Eclipse Project February 1998
On Feb. 26, the moon cast its shadow on Tallahassee. People on the Caribbean Islands were be able to view a total eclipse. In southern Florida, science enthusiasts viewed a partial eclipse. The Leon students collected data and viewed the eclipse using the projection method with the help of 2 visiting astronomers, Mr. Scott Howard and Dr. Harrison Prosper. See how students viewed the eclipse, collected data and analyzed data.
