Oracle Students, 250 miles apart, connect and share Java over the Internet!

On November 5, 2002, Mrs. McQuone’s Java students (Florida State University School, Tallahassee, FL) connected with Mrs. Hale’s Java students at Lecanto High School, Lecanto, FL using Netmeeting. At 11:05, Mrs. McQuone called Mrs. Hale with her cell phone. Mrs. Hale’s students could hear over her classroom speaker phone. Then the IP address was dialed and the ping of connection signaled that we were ready. Two problems were encountered while trying to run a Java program. First, Mrs. Hale’s class used NetSupport School software to let every computer in her room see our screen. Her class was able to take control of our computer. They showed us how to change the PATH and CLASSPATH settings appropriately. Then they noticed that we needed to load some specific classes in order for the Java program to run. In minutes her students solved the problem.

  • Our class was able to communicate and share information with another class in a different city.
  • The students relished the opportunity to talk with other students who know what Java is and are expert enough to help. Both groups agreed that this should be done regularly.
  • In the future we can see this being a very useful tool in showing new programs and projects that the different classes are working on.

Waiting for the next call!!!!

Student reaction:

“The idea of sharing information and communicating with other people across the world using NetMeeting has shown our students how much technology has grown. I can’t even fathom the effect that technology will have on the world in the next twenty years.” Elliott, FSUS

"By being able to use a program like Netmeeting, a class does not have to be limited to one physical location." Stephen, FSUS

“As a student I feel that NetMeeting is of great benefit to my Oracle experience, you aren’t restricted to the classroom resources when studying oracle. This gives you a more broad understanding of Oracle, thus increasing your knowledge of it by using NetMeeting.” Jonathan, FSUS

“We want to say thank you so much for sharing information with us via NetMeeting.  We, the mighty Wombats, encourage you to continue to sacrifice your bytecode to us.
