Students who are considering majoring in mathematics should have a natural aptitude for mathematics, a strong interest in mathematics, and be highly motivated to learn. Students majoring in math will have to successfully complete four mathematics courses in addition to the four mathematics courses required of all students for graduation.
Mu Alpha Theta
Mu Alpha Theta is a National High School and Community College Mathematics Honor Society. FSUS has an active chapter which all students interested in mathematics are encouraged to join. National standards require the following of its members:
- 3.0 average in all high school college prep math classes
- 3.0 average on all high school work
- Completion of 4 semesters of college prep mathematics for full membership (other members are given associate membership)
- Recommendation of mathematics teacher
The Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta (FAMAT) has an active competition schedule. They sponsor regional course level competitions in January, February, and March. Our chapter attends many of these competitions.
