Early Childhood Education

The FSUS Early Childhood Education Program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the Early Childhood industry; planning, management, finance, technical and production skills; underlying principles of technology; labor, community, health, safety, and environmental issues; and developmentally appropriate practices for children birth through age eight. The program partners with the Creative Childcare Center (Southwood) and the FSUS Elementary Department.

The FSUS Early Childhood Education Program consists of classroom instruction as well as students working directly with children. There are at least four occupational completion points which may result in the issuance of a Florida Department of Education Early Childhood Professional Certificate (ECPC). The ECPC is accepted for the DCF Staff Credential.

Instruction and learning activities are provided in a laboratory setting using hands-on experiences with the equipment and materials appropriate to the program content and in accordance with high quality standards in the field of child care. Observation and supervised work experiences with young children in the FSUS elementary department and a local community child care center are integral to this program.

Students will obtain certification in infant/child CPR and first aid through the American Red Cross "Babysitting" course. On-the-Job Training (OJT) is appropriate for Level IV program activities.

Fashion Design and Production

The FSUS Fashion Design and Production cluster is designed to prepare students for the initial employment in the garment and textile industry as garment manufacturers. The core has the foundation and basic skills needed for employability skills, workplace safety, and basic sewing skills. After successfully completing the appropriate courses for each occupational completion point of this program, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate appropriate basic skills essential to employment in the fashion design industry.
  • Operate and maintain equipment generic to the fashion design industry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how fashion design is affected by history and culture.
  • Demonstrate skill in the construction of garments with varied levels of difficulty.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship.

Also included in the FSUS Fashion Design Program is an opportunity for students to participate in job shadowing. On-the-Job Training (OJT) is appropriate for Level IV program activities.
