Child Study Team (CST)

CST conducts/monitors the following processes for special services as outlined in IDEA and NCLB directives:

  1. Teacher/Parent referral to CST.
  2. Complete Academic Improvement Plan (AIP).
  3. First Child Study Team Meeting to document pre-intervention work, review cumulative file, brainstorm interventions, recommend language evaluation, etc.
  4. Speech, language, vision, and hearing screening completed.
  5. Second Child Study Team Meeting (3+ weeks later) with parent(s) in attendance. CST reviews interventions, reviews screening results, reviews achievement/language results, decision regarding further referral, etc.
  6. Additional meetings may be scheduled to review evaluation results with the school psychologist or speech-language pathologist.

* State-mandated requirements for Exceptional Student Education eligibility:

Gifted - A Standard Score of 125 on a brief IQ screening is required to qualify for further testing at the FSU Multidisciplinary Center. The Florida Department of Education requirements are described HERE.

Specific Learning Disability - The psychological report must indicate a 15-point discrepancy between IQ score and achievement in any area (23-point discrepancy for 11 years and older) AND between IQ score and cognitive processing. The Florida Department of Education requirements are described HERE.

504 plans - A child who is diagnosed by a physician with a medical condition that interferes with learning may be eligible for a 504., FSUS and the student's parents/guardians can collaborate to write a plan that will provide the student with reasonable accommodations to support the student in the classroom. Speech/Language- The Florida Department of Education requirements are described HERE.

Child Study Team Members may include but are not limited to: guidance counselor, exceptional student basic education teacher, Title 1 Reading teacher, reading coach, speech/language pathologist, principal, gifted teacher, and parents/guardians.
