At Florida State University Schools we believe that the broad scope of Reading/Writing/ Speech components of the English/Language Arts curriculum and instruction will incorporate reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in an integrated methodology. This curriculum, using a variety of content, will extend across the 9-12 grades and the various subject areas' curricula. The curriculum should provide for the continuous individual development of reading, writing, speech, and language throughout all the years of a student's schooling.
The reading and writing experiences should lead to critical thinking and responding through reaction rather than simply through summary. We believe that language acquisition and learning are developmental: therefore, the teaching of reading and the language arts should recognize this process and avoid merely skill based objectives. However, basic sills will be taught in context at developmentally appropriate levels as needed.
We expect our classrooms will provide a textrich environment that promotes literacy. We will strive to make our language and literature curriculum accessible to everyone and promote the appreciation and enjoyment inherent in the life long experience of challenging reading, writing and speaking.
Lastly, our curriculum and instruction are student-centered where each student is encouraged to use language freely, to explore with language, and to experiment as part of their learning experience.
