Dear Parents, I am very pleased and honored to be serving as the new K-12 Curriculum Coordinator at FSUS / Florida High and look forward to a very productive year. This month a Curriculum Committee was formed and several members took time to meet and plan for the 2007-2008 school year. In doing so, we are in the process of creating a brochure, which will included our vision / mission statements and objectives as well an overview of the various programs available at the elementary, middle and high school grade levels. Elementary: Students learn the basics of reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science and the fine arts through three instructional configurations: Self-contained, team teaching, and clusters. Students in self-contained classes are working with one teacher in all subjects. |
February 2: Regional Latin Forum at Leon High February 10: Parents Meeting for 10th Grade at 5:30 in FSUS Cafeteria February 9: ACT testing February 12-15: FCAT Writing - Grades 4,8,10 February 25: Winter Orchestra Concert March 12 - 25: FCAT Testing: Reading, Math and NRT: Grades 3 - 10, Science : Grades 5, 8, 11 |

The team teaching approach enables two teachers to collaboratively provide
instruction to the students. Clusters afford teachers the opportunity to specialize in their
own areas of expertise while concurrently working with three grade levels. Each
approach focuses on preparing students for the rigor of the Middle School curriculum.
Middle School: Each student will receive instruction in their four subject areas (Language
Arts, social studies, math and science) and several electives, which are offered through
three different programs: Novel Opportunities with Lively Engaging Students (NOLES),
Building Responsible Individual Development with Greater Experiences (BRIDGES),
and Academic and Character Engagement (ACES). High School Credit: Eighth graders
have the opportunity to take a foreign language (Latin or Spanish) and Algebra I for high
school credit instead of an exploratory class.

High School: The cohesiveness of our prestigious faculty and staff provide an
environment that allows us to offer several graduation options: A four year standard
program requiring a minimum of 24 credits; a three-year standard college prep program
requiring a minimum of 18 credits; a three-year career prep program requiring a
minimum of 18 credits. Additionally, we offer nineteen (19) Major Areas of Interest
(MAI) and fifteen (15) Advanced Placement (AP) courses to sophomores, juniors and
seniors based on academic criteria and teacher recommendation.
In assisting students to make informed choices and explore career options, individual instructors may invite guests to talk about the skills, training and academic qualifications for a specific vocation or profession. Concurrently, teachers may issue creative and thought provoking assignments to further enhance awareness and understanding about careers related to their own disciplines. (Please contact me if you are interested in serving as a career guest speaker.) Additionally, faculty websites are provided for information regarding course syllabi, assignments, memos about special class events and acknowledgments. We encourage parents and students to visit the sites, which are available, to stay current with instructional occurrences and academic requirements. We are also in the process of posting curricular maps on the school website for course offerings. Each curriculum map will consist of an overview of units and skills that individual instructors will cover in their course of study. The Sunshine State Standards (SSS) and national standards are used as a guide in the development of the curriculum maps. The relevant and rigorous curriculum, rich extra curricular activities and caring professionals at FSUS/ Florida High provide a holistic environment that enable students to be successful in their future endeavors. I encourage you to be actively involved in the many wonderful opportunities that are being offered. I look forward to meeting and working with you during this school year.
