Kindergarten

In Movement, your student:
  • participates in physical activities.
  • moves body parts and objects (e.g., backward and forward, up an down, left and right).
  • moves in different ways in personal space or on equipment (e.g., slides, jumps, gallops).
  • understands body parts, body surfaces and body shapes.

In Motor Skills, your student:
  • develops the skills of throwing, catching, and kicking.

In Physical Activity, Personal Fitness, and Wellness, your student:
  • understands that physical activity is a major part of good health.
  • recognizes the important of physical fitness (e.g., heart rate, strength, endurance).
  • participates in group activities.
  • shares and cooperates with others.
  • states safety rules.

1st Grade

In Movement, your student:
  • participates successfully in physical activities.
  • follows directions using personal and general spaces.
  • identifies body shapes (e.g., wide, narrow, twisted).
  • improves locomotor (e.g., skipping, galloping) and non-locomotor (e.g., bending, twisting) skills.
  • becomes aware of body weight being supported and transferred.
  • demonstrates differences in body movement (e.g., fast and slow, light and strong force, near and far).

In Motor Skills, your student:
  • improves the skills of underhand and overhand throwing, catching, kicking, and striking (using a bat, racket).

In Physical Activity, Personal Fitness, and Wellness, your student:
  • states the benefits of regular physical activity as a major part of good health.
  • states the components of being physically fit (e.g., heart rate, flexibility, muscular strength, and endurance).
  • participates in group activities.
  • respects others.
  • follows safety rules.

2nd Grade

In Movement, your student:
  • participates successfully in physical activities.
  • begins to understand the use of personal and general spaces.
  • demonstrates safely movements of unison/contrast, mirror/matching, chasing, fleeing, and dodging.
  • refines the relationships of in front of and behind, lead and follow, over and under, and near and far.
  • recognizes and uses a variety of body shapes and the concepts of support and transfer of body weight.
  • understands and utilizes locomotor skills.

In Motor Skills, your student:
  • begins to refine the manipulative skills of throwing, catching, kicking, and striking (using a bat, racket).

In Physical Activity, Personal Fitness, and Wellness, your student:
  • recognizes the healthful benefits that result from regular and appropriate participation in physical activity.
  • begins to understand activities which promote muscular strength.
  • applies safe practices and cooperates with others.

3rd Grade

In Movement, your student:
  • participates successfully in physical activities.
  • tries to demonstrate an understanding of personal and general space, pathways, levels, and directions.
  • tries to understand and apply the concepts of transfer and support of body weight.
  • refines locomotor and nonlocomotor skills.

In Motor Skills, your student:
  • refines the manipulative skills of throwing, catching, kicking, and striking.
  • improves the manipulative skill of dribbling with one hand.
  • improves the manipulative skills of striking with body parts (e.g., volleyball serve) and implements (e.g., bats, rackets, sticks).

In Physical Activity, Personal Fitness, and Wellness, your student:
  • identifies and demonstrates proper warm-up and cool down used with healthy physical activities.
  • understands activities that promote a faster heart rate.
  • learns to monitor heart rate.
  • works cooperatively in culturally diverse groups, solving problems with socially acceptable practices.

4th Grade

In Movement, your student:
  • participates successfully in physical activity.
  • refines the use of personal and general space while playing games, gymnastics, or dance.
  • knows that use of body shapes can improve the look of a movement or change in action.
  • demonstrates the concept of support and transfer of body weight.

In Motor Skills, your student:
  • refines the skills of throwing, catching, kicking, striking (uses a bat, or tennis racket), and dribbling.

In Physical Activity, Personal Fitness, and Wellness, your student:
  • identifies the importance of a physically active lifestyle.
  • participates in activities that develop muscular strength and endurance (e.g., bike riding, rope jumping, and climbing).
  • demonstrates appropriate stretching exercises.
  • follows rules and works cooperatively with a partner or small group.

5th Grade

In Movement, your student:
  • participates successfully in physical activity.
  • demonstrates an understanding of personal and general space.
  • understands the movement of body parts through planes of space, and the concepts of pathways, levels, directions, and range of movements.
  • recognizes the use of body shapes and how they affect the outcome of a movement.
  • Knows ways to use transfer of weight.

In Motor Skills, your student:
  • refines the manipulative skills of throwing, catching, kicking, hand dribbling, and striking with and without implements.

In Physical Activity, Personal Fitness, and Wellness, your student:
  • applies the principles of a physically active lifestyle.
  • understands the concepts of muscular fitness, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.
  • demonstrates safe practices, rules, procedures and etiquette while cooperating in a diverse group.

Helpful Hints to Use At Home
  • Ask your student to follow movement directions (e.g., over and under, up and down).
  • Provide opportunities for your student to play with balls and jump ropes.
  • Regularly participate in family activities that involve fitness and motor skills.
  • Use seat belts and safety equipment.
  • Take your student to a playground and use the equipment.
  • Model sharing and cooperating in the family setting.
  • Provide practice opportunities of throwing, catching, kicking, and skipping.
